Group Health Insurance

If you don't have a health insurance plan, you may have to pay a tax penalty. So, you should get a policy that meets the requirements under the Affordable Care Act. Despite what you might have heard, you can't get arrested or thrown in jail if you don't have health care coverage, but you could be faced with additional tax liability if you don't have a plan in place.

Some of the qualified health care plans include:

  • Any individual health insurance plan that's purchased on your own or through a qualified health care exchange
  • Any group plan (including COBRA or any other retiree plan) that's offered by your employer
  • Any Medicare, Medicaid, or Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
  • Any TRICARE plan that's offered by the US Military
  • Any veteran's health care program
  • Any health coverage that's provided by the Peace Corps

If you have any of these plans, you won't have to pay the penalty, but there are some that don't qualify under the Affordable Care Act. Some of these include:

  • Vision insurance plans
  • Dental insurance plans
  • Workers' compensation coverage
  • Any coverage that's related to a specific condition
  • Health discount plans

Be sure to speak to someone at Workman Insurance Group in Louisiana to make sure you get a qualified plan.

  • You can prove that you're not able to afford health insurance
  • You're not required to file a federal tax return because your income is too low
  • You're a member of an Indian tribe that's recognized by the Federal Government
  • You're part of a health care sharing ministry
  • You're a member of a religion that objects to health insurance
  • You're in the United States illegally
